Windows 11 is Coming: Look back at Windows 1 to 10

Microsoft brought to life its Windows operating system back in 1985.

Today (24 June), as part of an exciting Microsoft Event, the tech giant will offer a first glimpse at Windows 11 - the latest version of Windows.

Here at Communicate Better, we thought it only made sense to look back at how far we've come and how much Windows has brought to the table.

A picture is worth a thousand words so we'll just let the imagery do the talking...

 

Windows 1

Let's start at the beginning. The original Windows 1 was released in November 1985.

 

Windows 2

Microsoft's first major update came in December 1987.

 

Windows 3

In 1990, Windows 3 supported 256 colours, offering a more modern, colourful look to the interface.

 

Windows 3.1

Windows 3.1 released in 1992 and introduced TrueType fonts making Windows a viable publishing platform for the first time.

 

Windows 95

Windows 95 arrived in August 1995 and with it brought the first ever Start button and Start menu.

 

Windows 98

In June 1998, Windows 98 came to life, and introduced IE 4, Outlook Express, Windows Address Book, Microsoft Chat and NetShow Player.

 

Windows ME

Windows Millennium Edition - aimed at the enterprise market - was released in September 2000.

 

Windows 2000

Windows 2000 was released in February 2000 and became the first Windows to support hibernation.

 

Windows XP

There's no denying, Windows XP - released in October 2001 - was a user favourite.

 

Windows Vista

The secret love child you wish was never born, Windows Vista came to life in January 2007.

 

Windows 7

Faster, more stable, and easier to use. Windows 7 was first released in October 2009.

 

Windows 8

Launched in October 2012, Windows 8 focused more on touch, and replaced the Start button and Start menu in favour of a more touch-friendly Start screen.

 

Windows 8.1

Hooray, the return of the Start button! Windows 8.1 was introduced in October 2013.

 

Windows 10

The most current version of Windows has been around since July 2015 so we've waited a long time for the next release...

 

Windows 11 is expected to be released in late 2021.
