4 key factors driving up fuel costs

1. Driving behaviour

This is no secret - poor driving habits can lead to greater fleet fuel costs.

Unnecessary acceleration of deceleration, harsh braking and idling all cause vehicles to consume more fuel than is needed.

 

2. Poor fleet utilisation

Are you making the most of your fleet? Could you achieve the same number of jobs with less vehicles/drivers? Are you using the right size of vehicles that are required to complete your job? These are questions you need to ask yourself.

After all, the more vehicles you have, the higher your fuel costs will be.

3. Your choice of tyres

Tyre rolling resistance is a critical factor to keep in mind. The more a vehicle resists movement, the more fuel it needs to be driven.

This means that if your tyres have a higher rolling resistance than necessary, your vehicle will demand more fuel and your costs will inevitably increase.

 

4. Time on the road

This is common sense but still worth mentioning - the more time drivers spend on getting to their destinations, the greater the fuel costs.

58% of fleet managers estimate that drivers fail to reach their destination one third of the time within the first ETA given to a customer.
