Mobile Internet Use Surpasses Desktop for the First Time, Study Reveals

It may not be earth-shattering news to the ears, but it is surprising that it’s taken this long for mobile internet usage to exceed desktop.

More people across the globe are accessing the world wide web via their mobile devices, as opposed to through desktop computers, for the first time.

According to a study set up by web traffic experts StatCounter, 51.3% of internet users have taken advantage of mobile and tablet devices over the last month, whilst 48.7% stuck with the traditional desktop.

"This should be a wake-up call, especially for small businesses, sole traders and professionals to make sure that their websites are mobile-friendly. Many older websites are not,” commented StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen.

He continued: "Mobile compatibility is increasingly important not just because of growing traffic but because Google favours mobile-friendly websites for its mobile search results, Post-Brexit, UK businesses should be aware, as they look to increase trade outside the EU, that India for example has over 75% internet usage through mobile devices."
